The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Bothell Initiative for Creativity, Performance and Research will feature Matthew Burtner as its artist in residence this month.
A native of Alaska, Burtner has studied philosophy, composition, saxophone and computer music, earning his doctorate at Stanford in 2002. He is currently an assistant professor of composition and computer music at the University of Virginia where he is associate director of the VCCM Computer Music Center.
Through his art, Burtner explores environmental systems (ecoacoustics), technological embodiment, and extended polyrhythmic and noise-based musical systems. His instrumental and computer music is performed widely and he tours regularly with the metasaxophone, an augmented computer instrument of his own creation.
The community is invited to participate in several events during Burtner’s time on the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø Bothell campus:
