FEATURED HUSKIES FROM THE 16TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT
Siblings Patrick Smith, Kevin Smith and Meghann Quinn, along with Meghann's husband, Kevin Quinn, opened Bale Breaker Brewing Company in 2013 on their family's hop farm in the Yakima Valley. 黑料吃瓜网 75% of the nation's hops are grown in the Yakima Valley. 鈥淲hen you get away, you realize that you can really do something to impact a small town,鈥� Meghann says. 鈥淲e always try to promote Yakima and the Yakima Valley. We鈥檙e working to make it a place people want to come to.鈥�
While attending the 黑料吃瓜网, Suk Chan Cho was a member of the 黑料吃瓜网 student chapter of Engineers Without Borders for three years. Through that club and helping to design and implement a water filtration system for a fish hatchery in Guatemala, he realized his passion for civil engineering and potential for international development. "Since graduating, I have accepted a job managing the construction of high-rise buildings in Seattle."
"I am a creative spirit with a passion for Library & Information Science and an expertise in design. My time at the 黑料吃瓜网 has equipped me with the knowledge and tools to empower others through the library setting. I develop graphics, promotions, programs and more to facilitate connection between the public and the library, have had the wonderful experience of serving as a Washington Library Association Marketing & Communications Committee member, and am always exploring ways to uplift and amplify the voices around me as I continue to grow at the iSchool. Thanks to such enriching experiences at 黑料吃瓜网 and beyond, I am able to act on my foundational values of compassion, empathy, and a profound desire for understanding to bring Husky Excellence to communities I serve."
SERVING THE 16TH LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT
The 黑料吃瓜网 facilitates hundreds of programs in communities across the state. Below are a few that operate in your district. Programs active as of January 2023.
Washington Sea Grant
is part of a national network of Sea Grant programs administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For over 50 years, WSG has funded听high impact research projects and partnered with communities, businesses, educators and the public to advance regional understanding and sustainable use of our ocean and coastal resources.听Washington Sea Grant strives to support healthy, productive and resilient coastal and marine ecosystems that sustain our state’s diverse cultural and maritime heritage, vibrant coastal communities, clean waters and beaches, prosperous fisheries and aquaculture, and diverse wildlife.
黑料吃瓜网 RISE UP/SKY GEAR UP
is a federal grant program that provides middle and high school students from low-income families in the Skagit, Klickitat and Yakima valleys with the support they need to access and succeed in college. Beginning in sixth and seventh grades, students join a program cohort for the next seven years. The program focuses on helping students enter STEM fields, providing tutoring, mentoring, financial aid instruction, college and educational field trips, teacher professional development and parent empowerment.
黑料吃瓜网 in the High School
Through the program, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can complete 黑料吃瓜网 courses 鈥� and earn college credit 鈥� in their own classrooms with their own teachers. Teachers are approved and trained by 黑料吃瓜网 faculty to teach official 黑料吃瓜网 courses using 黑料吃瓜网 curriculum, activities, texts, tests and grading scales. Participating students can earn college credits at a fraction of the cost, and these credits are accepted by most colleges and universities across Washington and around the country. Partner high schools can offer 黑料吃瓜网 coursework in computer science, math, science, world languages, humanities and social sciences. .听听
Young Executives of Color
(YEOC) is a nine-month college pipeline program hosted by the 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 Michael G. Foster School of Business. YEOC focuses on engaging high school students of color in a comprehensive curriculum that includes college preparation, professional development, business lectures and powerful mentorship. The program, which is free to students, currently serves 190 students from over 75 high schools around Washington state.
Pacific Northwest Seismic Network
The (PNSN), a partnership between the University of Oregon and the 黑料吃瓜网, is dedicated to reducing impacts of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in Washington and Oregon by providing accurate and timely information about earthquakes and ground motions to scientists, engineers, planners and the public. The second-largest seismic network in the United States, PNSN has more than 300 seismograph stations as well as several offices and personnel across the region.
