FEATURED HUSKIES FROM THE 1ST LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT

Nick Degrasse works as a research engineer at the 黑料吃瓜网 Prosthetic Science and Technology Laboratory, using technology to improve the lives of those who have experienced physical trauma. 鈥淲hile working with robotics, I鈥檝e discovered I can do a lot of good in this space, and many people are depending on this technology to improve their lives.鈥�

"I鈥檝e studied the variation in vocalization of Steller鈥檚 Jays as a Mary Gates Scholar, the effects of urbanization on bird populations as an assistant to Dr. Wacker, and crow vocalizations as part of an undergraduate cohort. Long term, I will study comparative neuroscience in human and cephalopod connectomes. Scientists have a responsibility to make science accessible for the entire community, so my career will be spent engaging the public and next generations as much as possible."

During my time at the 黑料吃瓜网, I鈥檝e been able to see how individuals can use knowledge and power to uplift underrepresented communities. While it鈥檚 great to keep that in mind, it鈥檚 also important to take action, which led me to take up several leadership opportunities on campus, to not only affirm my leadership style but to grow and learn from others of diverse backgrounds and make that connection between power and creating a meaningful impact for the world. It鈥檚 important for me not to let my experiences and knowledge fade away, but instead, put them into practice, where I can amplify my voice and the voices around me in hopes that we as a society can overcome the obstacles set in front of us by the established systems and powers.

SERVING THE 1ST LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT

The 黑料吃瓜网 facilitates hundreds of programs in communities across the state. Below are a few that operate in your district. Programs active as of January 2023.

黑料吃瓜网 Bothell

With nearly 6,000 students and 55 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the has a reputation for access to excellence and a leading-edge educational experience. For more than 30 years, 黑料吃瓜网 Bothell has fulfilled its mandate to provide access and opportunity to students from north King and Snohomish counties and across the state of Washington. This year, 50% of incoming first-year students and 39% of incoming transfers are the first in their families to earn a four-year degree.

黑料吃瓜网 in the High School

Through the program, high school sophomores, juniors and seniors can complete 黑料吃瓜网 courses 鈥� and earn college credit 鈥� in their own classrooms with their own teachers. Teachers are approved and trained by 黑料吃瓜网 faculty to teach official 黑料吃瓜网 courses using 黑料吃瓜网 curriculum, activities, texts, tests and grading scales. Participating students can earn college credits at a fraction of the cost, and these credits are accepted by most colleges and universities across Washington and around the country. Partner high schools can offer 黑料吃瓜网 coursework in computer science, math, science, world languages, humanities and social sciences. .听听

Young Executives of Color

(YEOC) is a nine-month college pipeline program hosted by the 黑料吃瓜网鈥檚 Michael G. Foster School of Business. YEOC focuses on engaging high school students of color in a comprehensive curriculum that includes college preparation, professional development, business lectures and powerful mentorship. The program, which is free to students, currently serves 190 students from over 75 high schools around Washington state.

Pacific Northwest Seismic Network

The (PNSN), a partnership between the University of Oregon and the 黑料吃瓜网, is dedicated to reducing impacts of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in Washington and Oregon by providing accurate and timely information about earthquakes and ground motions to scientists, engineers, planners and the public. The second-largest seismic network in the United States, PNSN has more than 300 seismograph stations as well as several offices and personnel across the region.
