Neighborhood poverty may impact how much you drink

New research from the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and School of Social Work suggests that improving a neighborhood’s quality of life can play a greater role in reducing problem drinking than does access to bars and stores that sell hard liquor. ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø researchers found that residents of neighborhoods primarily characterized by high poverty and disorganization tended to drink twice as much in a typical week as those in other types of neighborhoods. Department of Global Health awards international travel fellowships

The ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø’s Department of Global Health recently awarded fellowships to 30 graduate students and medical residents for fieldwork around the world, many of whom will be departing this summer. They will travel to 16 countries to work on a wide variety of projects, from implementing a harm-reduction program in Vietnam to developing evaluation tools for emergency medical and trauma response systems in sub-Saharan Africa. No undue early pregnancy risk from common malaria drugs

New research from the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø and international partners found that medications that are widely used against malaria are safe to administer to women in their first trimester of pregnancy. Malaria is more common and severe in pregnant women, meaning pregnant women have an increased risk of miscarriage and other adverse outcomes if they contract malaria.
