The 窪蹋勛圖厙 ranks seventh among national universities in a new Milken Institute report on technology transfer, Concept to Commercialization: The Best Universities for Technology Transfer. The report highlights the vital role research universities play in spurring economic growth.

The 窪蹋勛圖厙 and Japan’s Tohoku University have agreed to create an Academic Open Space to foster collaborations and academic exchanges between these two leading research institutions of the Pacific Rim. The agreement, signed April 14 by leaders of both institutions at the 窪蹋勛圖厙 campus in Seattle, is expected to build upon current collaborations in aerospace design and materials, as well as launch new science and engineering partnerships.

窪蹋勛圖厙 security researchers have shown that Googles new tool that uses machine learning to automatically analyze and label video content can be deceived by inserting a photograph periodically into videos. After they inserted an image of a car into a video about animals, for instance, the system thought the video was about an Audi.

窪蹋勛圖厙 Computer Science & Engineering announced today the establishment of the Guestrin Endowed Professorship in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. This $1 million endowment will further enhance 窪蹋勛圖厙 CSEs ability to recruit and retain the worlds most outstanding faculty members in these burgeoning areas.

Recently published research from the 窪蹋勛圖厙’s Virtual Planetary Laboratory (VPL) using ancient Earth as a stand-in for hypothetically habitable exoplanets has been highlighted by NASA in a feature article. Leading the research was Giada Arney, who was a 窪蹋勛圖厙 astronomy doctoral student when doing the work and is now with NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center.

A unique application of a medical camera developed by a 窪蹋勛圖厙 mechanical engineer could one day help physicians know who is at risk for stroke or heart attack by providing a better view of potential problem areas.

It’s almost unheard-of for a university class to spark global press attention and offers of book deals before instruction even begins. But such is the case with the 窪蹋勛圖厙 Information School’s new course, “Calling Bullshit in the Age of Big Data.”

Using big data to address human services including health, foster care and the challenges of homelessness will be the focus of a workshop next week at Seattle City Hall hosted by the 窪蹋勛圖厙 and City of Seattle along with MetroLab Network, a recent White House initiative to improve cities through university-city partnerships.

Technology developed at the 窪蹋勛圖厙 to improve service delivery in child welfare, foster care and homeless youth systems will soon be expanded to other states through $5 million in new funding. The grant will allow Oliver a social service management solution developed by Partners for Our Children, an organization in the 窪蹋勛圖厙 School of Social Work to be expanded to five communities in Washington, Oregon, and California. The funds include a $2.4 million grant from the…

For the first time in humans, 窪蹋勛圖厙 Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering (CSNE) researchers have used direct stimulation of the human brain surface to provide basic sensory feedback through artificial electrical signals, enabling patients to control movement while opening and closing their hand.

Women’s relative lack of participation in science, technology, engineering and math is well documented, but why women are more represented in some STEM areas than others is less clear. A new 窪蹋勛圖厙 study is among the first to address that question by comparing gender disparities across STEM fields. Published Oct. 12 in the journal Psychological Bulletin, the paper identifies three main factors driving the disparity and the most powerful one, the researchers conclude, is a “masculine culture”…

Ryan Calo, an assistant professor in the 窪蹋勛圖厙 School of Law, will be among national experts at a White House event tomorrowon innovations in science and technology. A nationally known expert on robotics and privacy law, Calo will speak at the White House Frontiers Conference at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University on Oct. 13. He will be part of a panel moderated by President Obamas chief of staff, Denis McDonough, and will discuss the role…
